My friend Melissa Luznicky Garrett was looking at Halloween costumes on Party City’s website . Under the Career category, she found some really awful costumes… for girls. For boys, too, but it was much worse for girls.
Melissa said this morning on Facebook:
Browsing Halloween costumes with my 8-yr-old daughter, I found this under the tab labeled “Careers.” Apparently Party City doesn’t believe girls should aspire beyond “Celebrity Starlet” or “Pop Star.” When I questioned Party City about this on Twitter, they responded: “Those are some of our more feminine Career Costumes,” and then provided a link to their wider selection of general costumes.http://www.partycity.com/category/halloween+costumes/girls+costumes+accessories/girls+career+costumes.doWhile there are admittedly some stinkers in the selection of “Career” costumes for boys (doesn’t every parent hope his/her son will grow up to be an “Escaped Prisoner”?), they still have the option of dressing up as police officers, firemen, air force pilots, astronauts, soldiers, and doctors.http://www.partycity.com/category/halloween+costumes/boys+costumes+accessories/boys+career+costumes.doWhat gives?
Party City recently opened in my town of Ithaca, NY, and my kids and I *love* the place. It’s bright, colorful, clean, and cheerful – not to mention affordable! I planned on buying my kids’ costumes from there – and probably still will – as an alternative to the temporary costume shops at the mall where (I believe) some of the costumes can be too scary or visually inappropriate for young kids. I just wish Party City offered a better selection for my daughter. PS – She wants to one day go to school at Cornell and be a vet when she grows up. NOT a “Cupcake Cutie.” Incidentally, a search for “vet” turns up this:http://www.partycity.com/product/vet+doctor+barker+dog+costume.do?from=Search&cx=0
I guess they get bonus points for equality in aspirations to be an escaped prisoner, even if Miss Dee Meaner is clearly a stripper or a dominatrix name… both fine and lucrative professions for an aspiring young woman (I’m half kidding) . The boy prisoner didn’t get the same equality quality treatment. That costume is just called Boy’s Escaped Prisoner Costume . He doesn’t get a cutesy name. Aww.
What the hell is a “feminine career choice”? Cheerleaders, pop stars, and woohoo…CUPCAKE CUTIE! Yes, I want to be the lovechild of Rainbow Brite and The Cake Boss when I grow up, said no girl ever.
Let’s not talk about the clown costume. The only suitable gender definition for a clown would be Demon.
Sheesh, if they’re going for more “feminine careers”, they could have at least included a nurse or a secretary. Shit,I don’t know…maybe even a Mommy. Although I’m certain that if they did offer those choices, they would be overly sexualized and ridiculous.
They could have at least had some Masculine Careers for Girls options there. Doctors are all very masculine, you know.
